“Crucial that judicial appointments to Supreme Court have highest integrity, ethical standing, and professional merit, – reports the official Twitter account of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. – Public Integrity Council is key to ensure that judges with lifetime appointments are of unimpeachable standing.”
Europeans are also concerned about the judicial reform and stress the importance of a transparent and fair competition. The press service of the EU Delegation in Ukraine quotes Hugues Mingarelli, Head of the Delegation, in its twitter: “Full #transparency is crucial in the upcoming final stage. Clear scoring methodology and publicity of final results is key”.
Ernst Reichel, Ambassador of Germany to Ukraine, said: “Successful selection of incorruptible and highly qualified supreme judges is a central element of the judicial reform and a foundation of a law-governed state.”
Martin Hagstrom, Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine, stressed that the results of selection of judges for the Supreme Court is essential for further judicial reform and future investments.
Judith Gough, British Ambassador to Ukraine, said that an independent judicial system is key for the attraction of foreign investments: “Selecting credible candidates as Supreme Court judges via a fully transparent process will be crucial for Ukraine’s justice reform. Independent judiciary needed to unlock Ukraine’s democratic and economic potential, and attract inward investment”.
As reported, the Public Integrity Council has called on the High Qualification Commission of Judges to ensure the transparency of the final stage of the selection of judges to the new Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the Commission members refused to publish the results of a personal voting held to overrule the conclusions of the PIC concerning the mismatch between the candidates’ characteristics and the criteria of integrity and professional ethics.
